Speech made at 10th Anniversary 1993 Ribbons
by Robyn Wallace 83-87 President.

In August 1983 a group of girls ( yes that's all we were), were talking at a light tackle tournament presentation at the Cairns Game Fishing Club and a young deckhand by the name of Jimmy Fairbairn, suggested that maybe we should put together a one day fishing tournament for local ladies, so we wouldn't miss out on the excitement and thrills experienced by overseas anglers who regularly visited our shores in search of some of the best game fishing in the world.

It never entered our minds that we could not achieve this. After a lot of hard work, research and help from many people the 1984 RIBBONS became a special day in the lives of many ladies. The sail past that day will always be remembered - the feeling of excitement and accomplishment of a dream becoming reality.

A well known author, Earl Nightingale once said "we become what we think about". The RIBBONS Tournament became the best 1 day ladies event, because we thought about it and turned our thoughts into actions. Now 10 years later - the RIBBONS is still proving to be a huge success.

To achieve success in anything you do in life first of all requires a goal or a dream to work towards. The second step is to become totally focused on that goal. Commitment and persistence follow on as a natural stepping stone to the accomplishment of your dreams. For some of us who have moved on - 1983 and the early years of RIBBONS was the realisation of our dreams.

Today, new people have become involved on the committee and with them comes lots of different and new ideas. This has allowed the RIBBONS to continue to be a huge success. While some of the faces may have changed, the dream remains the same...."To offer ladies from all walks of life the opportunity to participate in the best one day ladies fishing tournament in the world". I commend the present committee for following this dream. Without the committee - without the participants - without the sponsors - without the support of the Game Fishing Fleet - without those involved in the slightest way - the RIBBONS cannot continue to happen.

From its humble beginnings in 1983 to what it is today and what it will continue to be tomorrow, the RIBBONS Tournament reflects life in general:
Some people hope it happens
Some people make it happen.

The RIBBONS Tournament is a product of a group of dedicated people who have definitely, over the years made it happen! I have the utmost confidence that the RIBBONS will continue to grow and prosper. So, Go out there, and continue to make it happen!
